As Maliszewski noted, “It’s less about the tool, and it’s more about the thinking behind using the tool.” By teaching students to critically evaluate AI-generated content, we can help them develop essential skills for navigating our increasingly complex information landscape.

Experiential learning is another approach that has shown promise. Tasha Ausman, a math and science educator in Western Quebec, incorporates hands-on lab procedures into her classes. These procedures include a series of steps that students must follow, with note-taking throughout. By highlighting the value of every stage, even those involving “wrong” answers or different results, we can encourage students to see critical thinking as an iterative process.

Ultimately, teaching critical thinking skills requires a fundamental shift in how we approach education. We need to move beyond assigning readings and expecting students to develop these skills over time. By making explicit instruction a priority and promoting intellectual curiosity and skepticism, we can help our students navigate the complexities of the 21st century with confidence.
