The Unending Carnage: Israel’s Attacks on Gaza Expose the Hollow Ceasefire

The recent air strike that killed Firas and Salsabeel al-Masri, along with their three daughters and son, in Gaza City is a stark reminder of the devastating reality faced by Palestinians living under siege. Despite a US-backed “ceasefire” agreed upon nearly nine months ago, Israel’s attacks continue unabated.

Since the truce was announced, over 1,150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes, mostly civilians. This toll does not account for the countless others who have suffered injuries, displacement, and trauma due to Israel’s near-daily military campaigns in Gaza. The Israeli military claims that the strike targeted a Hamas member, but this raises questions about their true intentions.

Even if the target was legitimate, the devastating consequences that befell the al-Masri family cannot be justified as collateral damage. Rescue workers struggled to put out fires and bring out bodies in white shrouds, underscoring the horrific scale of destruction wrought by Israel’s actions. The fact that civilians are still being killed, despite a supposed ceasefire, highlights the gross inadequacy of international efforts to bring peace to the region.

The international community’s response has been woefully inadequate. Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States, have attempted to advance a peace plan that calls for Hamas’s disarmament and Israeli withdrawals. However, progress has been nonexistent. The United Nations’ condemnation of the ongoing Israeli strikes is welcome, but it falls short of concrete action.

Abu Yusuf al-Masri, Firas’s father, poignantly stated: “There is no relative calm, and there is no safe place at all.” His assertion that Israel’s actions are devoid of mercy or warning echoes the sentiments of countless Palestinians who have lost loved ones to Israeli violence. The UN human rights office noted that deliberately attacking civilians constitutes a war crime, resonating with these victims.

The situation in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of international law and the ease with which powerful nations can disregard it. As Thameen Al-Kheetan observed: “Nine months after the announcement of a ceasefire, still nowhere is safe for Palestinians in Gaza.” The responsibility for this carnage lies not only with Israel but also with the international community’s failure to hold them accountable.

The US-backed peace plan has shown little sign of progress. In fact, it seems more like a thinly veiled attempt to legitimize Israel’s occupation and maintain its stranglehold on Gaza. Continued Israeli attacks, despite the truce, demonstrate that this plan is nothing more than a hollow promise.
